LOCAL NEWS and NEW BOOKS

SUMMER IN WATERFORD

This may also go down as one of the oddest springs on record with record flooding and wind, freezing temperatures and a heat wave in May. Definitely challenging for all the gardeners.

CONGRATULATIONS and Many Thanks to NICK ARCHER for correctly guessing April 14th as 2023 date for our ANNUAL KEOKA LAKE ICE OUT Fundraiser. Nick most kindly and graciously donated back the proceeds. Did you know the library has been keeping track of this event since 1938.

Throughout the year, but especially during the summer, there are opportunities for Community sharing, assistance, and  and volunteering. We welcome you to attend an event here at the library, or attend one of the many Community and church events.

Full list of all the various programs and activities are found under 2023 Community Calendar

on our Facebook page, and on the town website: www.waterfordme.org

WATERFORD LIBRARY ANNUAL MEETING

WATERFORD LIBRARY ANNUAL MEETING Wed. June 14 at 6:30pm

Join us in celebrating the past year. Improvements include new energy efficient Heat Pumps made possible through a generous grant from the Association for Small and Rural Libraries Sustainable & Resilient New England Libraries Grant, and thanks to the Maine Community Foundation and legacy of the Flora Abbott Scholarship Fund, our shelf capacity expanded with the addition of twelve new locally handmade custom bookcases. Another grant from the Maine Public Library Fund is sponsoring three Chewonki Foundation Natural History children's programs this summer. We are so grateful to these major contributors as well as our many loyal patrons, donors, and dedicated volunteers. Refreshments served. All are welcome.

NEW HEAT PUMPS INSTALLED AT THE LIBRARY

The Waterford Library is delighted to announce that new Heat Pumps were installed in January. This project was made possible by a grant from the Association for Rural & Small Libraries through the generosity of a regional partner foundation. Additional funds provided by private donations and total costs were offset by rebates from effiencyMaine. We are most grateful.

The Association for Rural & Small Libraries (ARSL) builds strong communities through professional development and elevating the impact of rural and small libraries. ARSL recognizes the uniqueness of small and rural libraries and is committed to providing an environment that encourages excellence within this community of practice, supporting their goals of service and speaking on behalf of this important constituency. Since 1 in 3 public libraries in the U.S. serve a population of fewer than 2,500 people, there is a great opportunity to support these library professionals that are often overlooked. We believe in the value of rural and small libraries and strive to create resources and services that address national, state, and local priorities for libraries situated in rural communities.

COMMUNITY POLLINATOR GARDEN at the Waterford Library

You may have noticed a lot of buzz around the library grounds. In addition to our community vegetable garden, busy volunteers have been busily creating a new pollinator garden to further compliment our new landscaping. A new hedge, and Over 300 new bulbs have been planted already, with much more still in progress. This program is a combined effort of the Waterford Library, Waterford Congregational Church, and Master Gardener Program through the University of Maine Cooperative Extension and is entirely funded by public donations.
